COVID-19 sorely impacted the income and livelihoods of many Kenyans, particularly those of lower economic classes who relied on daily wages and work jobs requiring physical proximity. The pandemic erased employment opportunities, leaving many in uncertainty. Safaricom targeted to address this economic problem.

Seeing an opportunity in Safaricom’s extremely popular Bonga Points customer loyalty program, we identified a way to provide relief to most Kenyans. People typically used their points for airtime, data, or offset costs for new phones. With 15 billion points held in the market, we saw the potential for a broader impact.

To bring this idea to life, we transformed Bonga Points into a virtual currency. People could use their points to purchase food and groceries in over 200,000 partner shops. This initiative also allowed high-value customers to donate points, extending relief to family and friends in need. To amplify its impact, we increased the value of each point by 50%.

Following its massive success, this initiative has become a permanent program.
